-state_directory
Specifies a single directory where save state files are stored. Save state files are read and written either upon user request, or when using the -autosave option.
The default is sta (that is, a directory sta in the same directory as the MESS executable).
If this directory does not exist, it will be automatically created.

mess -state_directory <path>
